Douglas/Moultrie Counties

In July, I ran two races in one week-end, knocking out two counties in the process. I thought that was pretty good. Today, I ran one race and knocked out two counties with it. How economical!
Arthur, Illinois is laid out right on the border between Douglas and Moultrie Counties, in the heart of Amish country. Vine Street, which is the town's main street, is the county line. Today was the annual Rat Race 5K, which is part of the Labor Day Arthur Cheese Fest. After the race, we all got a piece of cheese and the t-shirts had a picture of a rat on it.
I've been to Arthur a few times and really like it. If you've never visited Amish country, Illinois, you should consider doing so. When traffic was stopped for the race, it wasn't cars that were held up but horse drawn carriages. The Cheese Festival looked nice and the biscuits and gravy breakfast held in the community center cost whatever the patron felt like paying.
The race started in Moultrie County, immediately went east across Vine into Douglas County and eventually circled back to Moultrie, before the finish down Vine Street. I'd say about two-thirds of the race was in Douglas County. My time was 26:10, a little slower than I've done this summer for a 5K. I was on vacation for a good chunk of August and haven't run at all since the Coon Creek Classic 10K. (what is it about races named after rodents?)
I'm counting this race as running in two counties, but I feel a little guilty about that, especially since such a short distance was in Moultrie County. I may revisit Moultrie someday, although I don't recall there being a lot of races there and the bottom line is I did run there as part of this race.
Although I have run races in three towns this year that I had never been to before (Hampshire, Highland and Clifton) I have yet to run a race in a county I haven't been in before. Hopefully that will change later this month, when I hope to run the Hills and Hollows half marathon in Valmeyer, Monroe County. In the mean time, 22 counties down, 80 to go.
